Grain sack fabric is very popular these days in farmhouse style home decor. Vintage grain sacks were typically made from hemp fibers and decorated with stripes in blue, red, green, gold or other colors. Vintage grain sacks are available in limited supplies. They were handmade in Eastern Europe by farmers during the late 1800's to early 1900's. The farmers grew hemp or linen crops, and they wove the natural fibers into sacks so they could transport their wheat or other grain to the market for milling. In order to distinguish their sacks from other farmers' sacks, they also wove a unique colored stripe pattern into the sacks, sometimes including their initials.
